The Role and Impact of Truth Commissions and Tribunals as Transitional Justice and Reconstruction Mechanisms in the Aftermath of the Second Congolese Civil War (1998-2003)

This paper argues that transitional justice mechanisms involving the post-DRC Civil War of 1998-2003 failed to produce desirable outcomes as they were based on a dubious process and dominated by Western models. I recommend context-based approaches to transitional justice grounded on indigenous and localized ways of healing pivoted on truth-telling, wide acceptance and re-building trust.
