Lindsay J. Benstead is Associate Professor at the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government and Director of the Middle East Studies Center (MESC) at Portland State University. Her research appeared in Perspectives on Politics, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Governance, and Foreign Affairs. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

 

Do Islamist Parties Reach Women?

**2020 Best Paper Winner (Middle East Category)**

Existing research posits that Islamists’ success stems from their ability to institutionalize constituent relations to serve marginalized citizens. This paper tests this hypothesis using a survey of 782 Algerians and finds that Islamists’ more institutionalized constituency service practices allows them to reach more marginalized from patronage networks (e.g., women).
