Hamza M. Zafer

Zafer is the Associate Professor of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. His book Ecumenical Community (Brill, 2020) explores the language and politics of communalism and boundary-making in the Quran. His research interests include religious movements around the Red Sea during Late Antiquity and the emergence of Classical Arabic and Ethiopic historiography.

The language of surplus in the Quran’s communitarian rhetoric contains traces of the integrative and expansionist force of proto-Muslim pietism. It provides clues about how their process of community-formation responded to the material circumstances of 7th century western Arabian cities and resulted in a larger socio-economic transformations.
