Noel Twagiramungu is a research fellow at Boston University and Director of the Leadership & Governance Policy Lab at the Africa Center for Strategic Progress. His current work focuses on transnational conflicts, human development, impact assessment, and variation in leadership styles and trajectories across Africa.

 

Inside the Tanganyika- Zanzibar Union: A case for Nyerere’s Third Space as an antidote to Tribalism

 

This paper uses Homi Bhabha’s concept of Third Space to reexamine what makes the 1964 Tanganyika-Zanzibar Union a unique success on a continent where ‘narrow chauvinist nationalisms based on race, ethnicity or territory are on the rise within and between African countries leading to wars and civil strife’.
