Michelle Sikes is an assistant professor of Kinesiology, African Studies and History at Penn State University.

 

“Like the Bullets She Triggers at Shooting Rangers, She has Suddenly Shot to the Top”: Early Debates over Female Soldiers in Kenyan History

 

By focusing on Parliamentary debate over women and war in the early 1970s, this study exposes the ways in which members of the Kenyan Parliament squared off over the issue, with fiery debate ensuing over whether female security personnel could marry, bear children, and issue orders to men.
