This is a paper attempting the relationship between Ottoman Sunni Sufism and Alawi/Shi'i Islam. As a Sunni scholar, and the chief-shaykh of the Jalwati sufi order in the early eighteenth century, Bursawi's masterpiece in Sufi Qur'anic exegesis, Ruh al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Qur'an, demonstrates Bursawi's approach to theological and political matters between the two camps.

Alawism and Shi‘ism in Ottoman Sunni Sufism; A Case Study on Isma‘il Haqqi al-Bursawi

The Ottoman state system was based on both Sunni and Alawi/Shi'i notions. This character of the tolerant Sunni Ottoman state system changed during the clash between the Ottomans and Safavids in the 16th century. Ismail Haqqi al-Bursawi who lived in the late 17th, and early 18th century, provided a relatively moderate interpretation on the matter.
