Aram Shahin is an associate professor of Arabic and the coordinator of the Arabic program at James Madison University. His interests include early Islamic intellectual history, Islamic political thought, and Islamic Sicily.

Different genres of Islamic literature that deal in part or in whole with war focus on different aspects of warfare. Some emphasize the religious aspect, while others concentrate on the legal aspects. Treatises on warfare or manuals of war, however, typically place all their focus on the pragmatic means of achieving military victory.
