Andrew Russo

University of Rochester

 

Andrew Russo is a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Rochester. His research focuses on Muslim and Christian relations in the late medieval and early modern western Mediterranean. He is currently working on his dissertation, tentatively titled “Exile and Memory: Andalusi Refugees in the Early Modern Maghrib, 1568-1654.”

 

Memories of the Morisco Expulsion in the Writings of Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Rafi?

 

This brief article investigates the intersection of cultural memory and authorship among Moriscos in North Africa. AN examination of the work of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rafi shows that even as he responded to the concerns of his contemporaries, he altered understandings of the Morisco experience and identity.
