Gift Wasambo Kayira recently finished his doctoral studies in history from West Virginia University. He lecturers at the University of Malawi, and researches on histories of development and ethnicity in 20th and 21st century Malawi.

 

Land Reform and the Politics of Development in Malawi, 1950s-1962

 

This paper examines how land became the center of political settlement during the closing decade of colonial rule in Malawi, a former British protectorate. It discusses how the state struggled to appropriate the discourse of land and development to address the political problem of land insecurity which none-white settlers faced.
