Joe Kotinsly is a third year PhD student at the University of Texas at Austin. His research currently focuses on the history of the Iraqi Opposition Movement to Saddam Hussein and expressions of Shi'i Identity in Iraqi State in Society under Saddam Hussein.

 

Brave New World Order: The Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq and the Politics of Sect

 

This study analyzes a discursive shift in the publications of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq between its formation in 1982 and 2003 to shed light on various shortcomings in existing approaches towards the study of “sectarianism,” in the modern Middle East.
