Asher Lubotzky

Asher Lubotzky is a doctoral candidate in the history department at Indiana University. His research focus is decolonization, apartheid, and the Global Cold War in Southern Africa, as well as Africa-Israel relations, past and present. He is a Gottwald Fellow for the 2020-21 academic year.

 

“Don’t Call Us Kushim”: Racialized Experiences and Political Activism among African Students in Israel in the 1960s

 

Throughout the 1960s, several hundred Africans studied in long-term academic or vocational programs in Israel. Although part of larger international deals between Israel and Africa, these students actively promoted their interests. Facing racial prejudice and global Cold War realities, they employed strategies to contest and shape their hosts’ attitudes.
