Susan  Cutter, Ph.D.

Dr. Susan Cutteris a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Geography at the University of South Carolina where she directs the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute. She is also a member of the Big Data Health Science Center Geospatial Core. Her primary research interests are in the area of disaster vulnerability/resilience science and how vulnerability and resilience are measured, monitored, and assessed.  Her policy-relevant work focuses on emergency management and disaster recovery at local, state, national, and international levels, with funding from NSF, the US Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, and others. Dr. Cutter is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (1999).  She is also past President of the Association of American Geographers (2000), receiving their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
