
NCURA Distinguished Educator Marianne Rinaldo Woods, Ph.D., J.D. is the Director of the Master of Science Program in Research Administration and a faculty member in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Advanced Academic Programs at Johns Hopkins University. She is an international specialist on all issues pertaining to research administration and has consulted and lectured on research administration issues throughout the world. She is often called upon by universities both domestic and international to consult on complex research administration issues ranging from misconduct in science to licensing of intellectual property.
Prior to coming to Johns Hopkins University to launch the MS in Research Administration, Dr. Woods retired as Senior Associate Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where she was responsible for oversight of all aspects of research administration including Sponsored Programs (pre and post award); Contracts and Industrial Agreements both domestic and international; Research Integrity and Misconduct in Research or Scholarship; Research Compliance including the IACUC, IRB, COI, Export Controls; Research Support; Commercialization, Technology Transfer and Innovation, and; Metrics for Research Administration. She was also responsible for the development and implementation of university-wide policies and procedures ranging from conflict of interest to intellectual property. She also served the University as the Responsible University Official.
Prior to UTSA Dr. Woods was Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Alabama where she started their Center for Innovation, Technology Transfer Office and Research Compliance Office as well as creating and operating a comprehensive Office of Research Administration which included pre-award, post-award, and research accounting. She started a medical IRB, implemented clinical trial policies and procedures, designed and implemented procedures for technology development and licensed intellectual property.
Dr. Woods is the 2015 recipient of the Johns Hopkins Dean's Award for Academic Excellence in Program Growth. She is the 2009 recipient of NCURA's highest honor, the Achievement in Research Administration Award. She is also a recipient of NCURA's National Distinguished Service Award and NCURA's Region V Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Woods was one of the recipients of the 2006 Licensing Executive Society's National Deal of Distinction Award. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Society for Biomedical Research and Past President of the Texas Technology Transfer Association (T3A). Dr. Woods is a founding member and former president of the Texas Chapter of the Society of Research Administrators International. She has served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR), the University Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP), and The FBI Citizens Academy. She has served as the University Administrative Representative to the Federal Demonstration Partnership and was Chair of the Export Controls Working Group.
