Lourdes Alvarez-Ortiz

Lourdes Alvarez-Ortiz’ career in education spans over 25 years and several roles from “on the ground” to “behind-the-scenes.”  She is an independent educational consultant, a bilingual-bicultural school psychologist, and ASCD faculty member with extensive experience working in urban school districts.

In her educational leader capacity, and partnering with school districts, she has led non-profit organizations in the implementation of one-of-a-kind reform initiatives to close the opportunity gap. This work focuses on turning around underperforming schools by increasing opportunities, improving outcomes, and creating successful alternatives for disengaged youth.

Alvarez-Ortiz has advocated for culturally and linguistically non-discriminatory assessments and the use of strengths-based practices. With expertise in assessing and supporting students’ socio-emotional and academic development, she has been instrumental in creating safe, supportive, engaging, and asset-based school culture and climate, particularly for students and families who experience adversity and those who serve them.

At the center of Alvarez-Ortiz’ work is the relentless pursuit of empowering students, families, educators, and communities to capitalize on their potential. She has worked collaboratively with teachers and administrators to optimize students’ potential, successfully engage families and communities, and use culturally responsive practices while adopting a strengths-based approach.

Alvarez-Ortiz presents at local, state, and national conferences including ASCD and TESOL. She also facilitates webinars and professional learning events. She holds a doctorate degree in school psychology from Temple University and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Puerto Rico.

Alvarez-Ortiz has written articles for ASCD Inservice, the ASCD blog, and Colorín Colorado.  She is a co-author of Teaching to Strengths: Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress.
