Using sample syllabi from previous CLICK virtual exchange projects - Gazelle International’s program for VE -, we will consider how same-discipline and interdisciplinary projects can achieve similar outcomes for 21st-century skill development. In an interactive component of the session, we will brainstorm ways to increase faculty buy-in and engagement with VE programs, particularly in the applied sciences fields. We will consider how to add the international component to project-based learning in a way that also increases employability for students post-graduation. This workshop is suitable for both teachers and administrators.

Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce: Internationalizing Community College CTE Courses

With Heather Singmaster, Director, Center for Global Education at Asia Society, Jennifer Manise, Executive Director, Longview Foundation, Suzanne LaVenture, Director of International Education, Davidson County Community College, and Dawn Wood, Director of International Programs, Kirkwood Community College.

The world is increasingly interconnected. One in ten Americans is foreign born, and local communities—urban, suburban, and rural—are growing more diverse. To take advantage of global market opportunities, companies want employees with the knowledge and skills to work across cultures. Therefore, faculty teaching in career and technical education (CTE) pathways must prepare their students to compete, connect, and cooperate on an international scale. In this session, we will examine this need as well as examples of how some institutions have already started internationalizing their CTE programs. Finally, we will explore resources and strategies to assist CTE faculty in providing opportunities for their students to gain employability skills needed for success in a global economy.

Cross Cultural Communication: Social Identity, Privilege, Allyship

With Jeff Goldman, Executive Director, Manna Project International

This seminar aims to improve participants’ knowledge, adaptability and skills for intercultural communication and competence using a social justice framework. Content will be introduced to deepen participants’ awareness of their own social and cultural identities and how that impacts intercultural interactions. Theory and practice will enable participants to better understand one’s own social identity and how it is formed as well as how it can be perceived; to understand the concepts of social identity, privilege and oppression and how they impact social interactions; to learn what it means to be an ally; to receive useful tools and knowledge in order to become a better ally.
